Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club will certainly make their presence felt at the carnival, with six crews in action on the day.
The club’s two under 23 women’s crews, the Lifejackets and the Young and the Restless, will join the under 19 men’s crew, the Chinese Cooks, and the men’s reserve crew, the Wild Turkeys, in competition, and the Broulee club will also be entering two Canberra-based crews, the open women’s and men’s reserves.
Broulee deputy boat captain Rob Pollock is reservedly optimistic about the club’s chances.
“We’ll do reasonably well,” he said.
The men’s reserves crew suffered a recent blow when Darren Phillips broke his hand, which will sideline him for five weeks.
His place will be taken by Peter Halkett.
Pollock knows his rowers will have to work hard for success.
“There will be some good opposition for sure, but we will be near the pointy end,” he said.
“It will be interesting to see how much our under 23 girls’ crews have improved, because they have been training hard and going well.”
Pollock is confident the Chinese Cooks will put in a strong showing.
“They’ll be up there in the top two or three,” he said.
“The reserves will be happy to make the final, but they’ve got a lot of promise.”
Batemans Bay Surf Life Saving Club members will be hoping to back up their recent World Masters Games success when they field four crews in the event.
The women’s masters crew One Life Warriors, which won gold at the World Masters Games, will include new member Michelle Lee who will be rowing in her first race.
They will compete in the open division alongside the regular Batemans Bay open women’s crew Darren’s Divas.
The under 23 crew should be an under 19 crew, but rower Jarred Barton is 15 days too old. Sam Wilkinson, who has only rowed half a dozen times, will compete in his first carnival with this crew, as will Anthony Bellette.
Darren Reidy, who will sweep Darren’s Divas, will do likewise with the club’s men’s reserves crew. Both of these crews are expected to do well.
The club’s biggest hope is the open men’s crew of Wayne Coppin, Mick Bellette, Kolo Fifita and Brian Stephenson.
“I will be surprised if they don’t do really well,” sweep Neil Innes said.
Moruya Surf Life Saving Club will have three Canberra-based crews at the event - one open men’s and two open women’s teams.
