The Tasar is a lightweight two-handed dinghy with a completely standardised design and manufacture so that performance depends on the crew alone. The 78-strong world championship fleet included entrants from Japan, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands and the USA.
The Douglass’s did not have it all their way, with Australian champions Shane Guanaria and Felix Grech from Sydney taking the lead after the first day of racing.
During one race the race organisers disadvantaged the Douglass’s with a botched change in the course.
Rob was obliged to lodge a protest with the international rules jury and redress was granted. Subsequently, lightweight Japanese crews featured strongly as the breeze dropped off. The Douglas’s came to the fore with a string of good results in the second half of the 12-race regatta. They had the victory sewn up with a day to spare.
Rob and Nicole Douglass won their previous world championship at the 2005 event held in Darwin, which attracted a fleet of 131 Tasars.
When he is not sailing, Rob is a well known accountant around Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. Nicole is campaigning to compete in women’s match race sailing at the 2012 Olympics.
