The world’s most famous cancer survivor offered advice and support to Johnston in his battle with the same form of the disease.
Such are the demands on Armstrong’s time that many call but few are summoned to spend time with him. All that changed when he read Johnston’s story.
Chosen in Australia’s junior team for the World Mountain Bike Titles in Canberra last year, Johnston was diagnosed and operated on just three weeks out from the race. All hope of achieving his dream seemed lost.
Two weeks later he took the first tentative pedal strokes and rekindled the dream. Doctors granted him permission to race before chemotherapy started. The dream became reality.
Johnston yielded his front line grid spot and started from the rear in 76th spot - a distinct handicap.
With great courage he worked through the field to finish in 50th spot.
Not only Armstrong was eager to meet Johnston. Australia’s world road race champion Cadel Evans had also read his story and was proud to shake his hand. Phil Liggett - “the voice of cycling”, American champion George Hincapie, and Tour of Spain winner Alejandro Valverde all gave Johnston words of encouragement.
“It was inspiring to meet the world’s best cyclists and to think that a junior from Moruya is in their thoughts”, Johnston said.
“I take heart from this and thank everyone for making possible these unforgettable meetings.”
