Cricketers are renowned for being tough combatants.
But this weekend, dozens of batters and bowlers will be kitted out in bright pink pads and caps all in the name of a very “worthy cause”.
Tomorrow is Pink Stumps Day, a day set down for community cricket clubs all over Australia to promote the McGrath Foundation.
Pink Stumps Day was launched last year and the McGrath Foundation was bowled over with the amount of support it received.
“Pink Stumps Day was started to involve local communities and we were blown by how big it was,” McGrath Foundation chairman and co-founder Glenn McGrath said.
The Batemans Bay Junior Cricket Club and the Tuross Head Cricket Club are among those in the Eurobodalla getting in the pink spirit.
And for one Batemans Bay Breakers player, the day will hold special significance.
Lachlan Knight’s mum, Julie, is a breast cancer survivor and she is thrilled to see South Coast youngsters getting behind the cause.
“I’m pleased to see the local community get involved and anything anyone can do to help is great,” Julie said.
“Especially for the boys to get behind it and see pink as not just for girls is really good.”
Last year, 665 clubs took part to help raise more than $550,000 for the McGrath Foundation.
But perhaps even more important than the money raised is the fact that Pink Stumps Day will help spread the message of awareness.
“Lachlan knows firsthand what it’s about, but now his friends will get an understanding as well,” Julie said.
“There are a lot of young people now that get cancer and (children) all think that they die.
“So Lachlan can say ‘my mum had cancer and she’s still around, so now we can help other people’. It’s all about awareness.”
Most sporty boys would probably cringe at the thought of dressing up in bright pink, however Julie suggested otherwise.
“I think all boys secretly like pink,” she said with a laugh.
“They’ll have some fun with it and I know Lachlan doesn’t mind wearing pink. He’s more than happy to support the cause.”
Bay Breakers player Tim Bath is keen to do his bit.
“It’s going to be great and we want to raise a lot of money,” he said.
The Bay Breakers will take on the Bay Bombers tomorrow in a special local derby at Surfside, while pink cricketers will also take to the pitch at Tuross Head’s Kyla Oval.
The Thunder will play against the Lightning in the under 12s clash before the men’s A grade side take on Broulee.
Tuross Head veteran Boyd Brennan urged the community to get behind the event.
The Tuross Head Cricket Club will hold a raffle on the day, along with several other activities.
