People crammed into their local hotels and clubs to watch the action unfold, which left staff members “flat out” at the Bay View Hotel.
Publican Mick O’Brien said they had been busy since 8am with most people picking a Bart Cummings trained horse for the win.
“I think it’s on par with every other year,” he said.
“It’s been flat out since 12pm. It will be an excellent day.”
Only the televisions could be heard as people held their breath during the race at the Mariners on the Waterfront.
Employee Dean Hamilton spent the day assisting people with their bets and said everyone was in a really good mood for the event.
Even the Reserve Bank’s decision to raise the official interest rate by a quarter of a per cent did little to dampen the celebrations.
“It’s been really busy, but it’s been very good. It’s just a great day,” Mr Hamilton said.
“It’s true what they say - this race does stop the nation.”
Mr Hamilton said the favourite bets on the day were Viewed, Alcopop and Roman Emperor, all of which failed to produce.
Shocking was followed to the line by Crime Scene and Mourilyan.
