Police spent yesterday scouring a Bingie home believed to be linked to the Rebels Batemans Bay chapter following Tuesday’s discovery of an alleged amphetamines factory at the property.

Far South Coast Inspector Gary Huard said the raid was the result of extensive investigations by local and Federal police into bikie gangs across NSW.

“The investigation is linked to one of the members of the Rebel gang,” he said.

Officers swooped on the premises and arrested three people at 3pm on Tuesday.

Insp Huard confirmed that the trio, who came from outside the area, had been released without charge pending further investigation.

Police have yet to speak to the owner of the property.

However, following an early morning tip-off from local bushwalkers yesterday, police were able to uncover a vehicle hidden in dense bush on Crown land behind the property.

The Independent was at the scene when officers pulled the V8 utility from its hiding place.

“(The car) has been here over night,” Insp Huard said. “It’s linked to the investigation.”

The heavy police and media interest in what was, until now, a tranquil spot on the Far South Coast has left local residents reeling.

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, was shocked to hear of the arrest.

“It’s a complete shock,” she said. “I knew (the neighbours) were connected to the Rebels but they’ve been good neighbours up until now.”

According to Insp Huard, this was one of the first times the Batemans Bay chapter of the Rebel bikie gang had come to police attention in recent years.

“We did an operation about 18 months ago but that was more about licensing,” he said.

“That’s essentially all that they have really come under notice for.”
