It was a very fitting start to the proceedings, Federal Member Kike Kelly said later, as heritage was an important and relatively untapped aspect of the district.
The function marked the launch of a $100,000 project to stimulate tourism in Batemans Bay. Batemans Bay Chamber of Commerce received the grant from the Federal Government.
Chamber president Geoff Hatton said the aims of the program included not only attracting people here but also making sure their experience encouraged them to come back.
“It’s not often a Chamber of Commerce receives a grant of $100,000,” he said, “and we are going to do the best with it.”
Mr Hatton said elements of the program included training for hospitality, tourism and retail businesses “to increase levels of customer satisfaction and business returns.”
It also included preparation and erection of banners depicting key visitor experiences here.
As well, there would be spring promotional campaign aimed at improving pre-peak season bookings for accommodation and tours.
Mayor Fergus Thomson said that this area comprised a wonderful product.
“But it doesn’t take much to tarnish people’s holidays,” he said.
“All the work that goes into attracting people here can be ruined by some elementary mistakes.”
Mr Kelly agreed with that. He went on to say he felt some of the aspects of this area were not being fully recognised, including its heritage.
He forecast an exciting time for the district’s tourism, adding: “the potential of this district is boundless”.
