Eighty-one-year-old Elizabeth Gallagher, of Malua Bay, was given a unique Mother’s Day present by her daughter Fran Devonald on Sunday – the opportunity to flour bomb a target from an aeroplane during Moruya Aero Club’s Open Day.
She was taken up in a Gazelle aircraft with pilot Liz Daldy and released a flour bomb with the aim of landing it in a box marked on the ground.
Not only did she have a ball up there, she landed the bomb right in the box, and was declared the day’s winner.
“Eight others had tried, but the closest anyone had got was two metres away from the box,” Moruya Aero Club pilot and instructor Sheldon Jones said.
Elizabeth had a smile like a split watermelon when she landed.
“It was fantastic up there,” she said.
“It was exciting and I got a bird’s eye view of everything.”
Pilot Liz was suitably impressed by Elizabeth’s attitude and precision.
“She was excellent,” she said.
The Open Day itself was also excellent, and hundreds turned up despite inclement weather keeping some visitors from the likes of Canberra and Nowra away.
Jodie Linquist did her first tandem skydive with Skydive Oz after daughter Cassie won a Throw Momma From The Plane competition.
“She said she loved it but wouldn’t do it again straight away,” said MC David Farrell, who interviewed her after the jump.
David took on the MC role and did better than he originally thought he had.
“I was out of my depth because I don’t know much about aeroplanes, but apparently people liked that,” he said.
As a reward for his efforts, he was treated to a “magnificent” flight in a Gazelle over his Meringo home.
The Australian Army’s Red Beret parachute team performed three jumps, and planes performed aerobatics and formation flying throughout the day.
Dotty Prose was taken for a flight aboard a Cessna Bird Dog, the same type of aircraft her late husband, former Moruya Aero Club president and RAAF pilot Alex Pedaschenko, flew in during the Vietnam war.
