Businesses urged to adopt a pensioner

28/05/2008 2:37:00 PM
MOGO believes it’s the first Eurobodalla town to Adopt a Pensioner, but it doesn’t want to be the last.

The Mogo Ice Creamery and Outdoor Café has started a collection for the shire’s pensioners, and it wants other Mogo businesses to do the same.

“We get a lot of pensioners; they are a great bunch of people,” cafe staff member Candace Wirth said.

“I think people can get this connotation of ‘old and frail’. These days they are a lot more fit, active, but they’re not getting a fair deal.”

Ms Wirth said money raised would be sent to a pensioners and superannuants fund at the end of each month that would then distribute the money.

“Most people would have observed pensioners at the supermarket counting out their money very carefully to pay for a meagre amount of groceries. We are not powerless to help and not powerless to effect change,” Ms Wirth said.

“It would be nice to think that if we can keep the momentum going on this issue, the Federal Government will use some of the Budget surplus to help.”

Ms Wirth said the week-old campaign had already proved popular.

“It certainly had its humorous side - older people asking if they can take money out instead of putting it in,” she said.
